The Benefits of Laughter Exercises

Each laughter session incorporates deep breathing.  "Laughter Yoga" is beneficial to the respiratory system, increasing oxygen flow, and assisting the body’s ability to metabolize nutrients.  The digestive system and circulatory system are then better able to promote the health of all the body tissues.

Laughter exercises help to SIMULATE true rhythmic laughter, which often STIMULATES genuine laughter.  The acts of smiling and laughing lead to a more positive mental attitude, more optimism reduced pain, lower blood pressure, and increased joy.  Each session also includes arm raising and neck and shoulder stretching.  Done together, all of these help to increase muscle relaxation and reduce stress.

Scientific research has shown that laughter reduces stress and enhances the immune system by preventing the detrimental effects of stress hormones.  Someone once said, “Laughter is like changing a baby’s diaper.  It doesn’t permanently solve any problems, but it does make things better for a while.”

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Trouble knocked on the door, but hearing laughter, hurried away.”

When you are involved in a hearty laugh, you are focused on the present.  You aren’t thinking about the sad news that you received yesterday.  You aren’t worrying about what the frightening thing that will happen tomorrow.

Your negative thoughts and worries are temporarily set aside and you are able to enjoy the laugh as it cleanses and refreshes you.  Perhaps when the laugh is over, you will realize that you are able to deal with the sad news that you heard yesterday and the frightening thing that worries you.  

Laughter Therapy is a healing mechanism which helps to improve and maintain a positive mindset.  Laughing in a supportive environment enhances self-esteem, assists with coping strategies, increases self-confidence and improves social skills.  Charlie Chaplin once said, "In order to laugh, we must be able to play with our pain."

The word to heal comes from the root word "haelen" which means tomake whole. Socrates said, "As it is not proper to cure the eyes without the head, nor the head without the body; so neither is it proper to cure the body without the soul."
